Why Students Love To Study In Aber

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Thursday, November 29, 2007 0 comments
During the summer Aberystwyth University was voted one of the top destinations in the country to study by students.

Following the recent accolade the Aberystwyth Students Union has started a week long poll to see why students love to study in Aber. The postcard survey stated on Monday 12 November and included questions such as, I love Aber because..., I'd love Aber even more if..., and The Union would be better if... Response to the survey has been great with over 1,100 responses.

Next The Guild will be asking locals what they think of students, So look out, as from the 1 December students will be asking town's folk what they think. People in shops, public houses and from around town will be asked three simple questions, I love Aber students because..., I would love Aber students more because..., and I would like more involvement with the Students' Union because... So be prepared with your answers. Once the two initial surveys have been carried out, their results will be studied to see how the University can improve the experience for students studying and learning in the Welsh seaside town.

Masterplan Final Draft Soon

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Thursday, November 29, 2007 0 comments
The Aberystwyth masterplan hailed as the key to the future of Aberystwyth, will be displayed at the Welsh Assembly Government Offices at Y Lanfa on Thursday 6 December. The exhibition also takes place on Friday 7, Saturday 8 and Monday 10 December and is open to anybody interested in the future regeneration plans for the town.

The plan takes a look at transport, housing needs, economic development, planning and leisure activities, it also identifies various areas of the town with an eye on future development over the coming years.

Over recent years Aberystwyth has experienced economic growth with large retails parks built to accommodated high street shops found in the rest of the UK.

With the continuing pressures to move the Railway Station out of town, Aberystwyth Town FC ground & stadium to Blaendolau and a new Park and Ride facility based in Llanbadarn, the exhibition should be well worth a look. The council also mentions it will be used to help determine future planning applications.

Healthy Beef To Healthy Heart

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Tuesday, November 13, 2007 0 comments
Nowadays food is always in the headlines with government officials and doctors warning us of potential problems with our diet of red meat and saturated fats, leading to such problems as cardiovascular disease.

A five year research programme by the government and industry will look into the potential of perennial ryegrass in obtaining higher content of omega-3 rich polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA). With the benefits passed on to humans via beef cattle.

"Grass feeding not only enhances the content of beneficial omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the meat but it also delivers other useful components such as antioxidants, vitamin E and carotenoids and the derivatives of pigments such as chlorophyll which help to improve colour, shelf life, and taste of the meat," said Prof. Scollan.

With the heightened awareness of today’s consumers for healthier more nutritional food products and the farming industry competing against increased globalisation, the benefits to both farmer and consumer of consistently high quality beef will be good news for UK beef producers.

In 2005 the consumption of beef and veal continue to increase, great news for farmers looking to restore profitability. 1,064,000 tonnes of red meat with a total retail and food service value of £5.6 billion pounds per annum.

For more information about this project read the Healthy Beef To Heart article.

Rheidol Valley West Wales UK

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Sunday, November 11, 2007 0 comments

Pictures of the Rheidol Valley East of Aberystwyth out towards Capel Bangor. Pictures show the Rheidol hydro-electric scheme dam, the hydro-electric scheme is said to be the powerful of its kind in England and Wales. The visitor centre attracts many people, who come to see the exhibitions, video room and cafeteria. The area is also ideal for pick nicks during the summer months.

If your thinking of getting outside into the elements the Rheidol Valley has many walks to offer you, some easier than others so please take advice before heading off.

The Rheidol River arrives in Aberystwyth harbour where it meets the Ystwyth River before heading out to sea.

Aberystwyth Pub Guide - Drink & Party In Aberystwyth

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Sunday, November 11, 2007 0 comments
Aberystwyth pubs are one of the main attractions for party revilers. Aberystwyth has been well known for its pubs for many years, it has been said that the town contains more pubs within one square mile than anywhere else in the UK! Whether that's true today I'm not sure, but for a small seaside town it does support a large number for it's size.

The large student population together with the summer tourists make for a lively and vibrant combination, the weekends are the busiest period with stag and hen parties, fancy dress and clubbers coming to enjoy a drink and the nightlife.

Since the introduction of the no smoking ban, a couple of pubs have introduced a designated area for smokers, those pubs that don't tend to find the entrance to the pub the main focal point, for those who enjoy a smoke. Personally I think it's great, as I'm not smelling of cigarette smoke after a night out.

Whether the smoking ban has made any significant effect on trade for local pubs, I'm not sure, but undoutably it has changed the behavior of many smokers, either smoking less or giving up altogether, which can't be a bad thing.

Park and Ride & Town Centre Parking

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Friday, November 09, 2007 0 comments
I was recently sent a post about Aberystwyth Park and Ride, here it is:

I recently visited Aberystwyth and the best thing about it was the road out. I approached the town from Hereford and was immediately face with a blizzard of street signs saying 1hr parking only. I found a car park which spaces I guess for 40cars!. On the sea front one side of the road was 1hr the other 4hrs! When I left the town to drive up the welsh coast I came to a park and drive. Why wasn't there a sign as you approach the town coming down a major road saying "Your car isn't welcome in our Town please follow the park and drive signs"

What are your views on this, are the signing for the Park and Ride adequate?
