Lands End to John O' Groats Charity Cycle Ride

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Thursday, June 26, 2008 3 comments
Businessman Andrew Kirtley (44) from Rheidol Rosettes is challenging himself in September, to cycle nearly 900 miles from Lands End to John O' Groats in aid of the Macmillan Cancer charity. Andrew is a regular sight pedalling his way around the picturesque lanes of Ceredigion. He said, "I'm fortunate to live in this beautiful area and the hills of Wales are a fantastic way to get fit. Initially it was very hard work, but there isn't a better training ground to have. I'm on schedule at the moment cycling about 150 miles a week to increase my fitness level for this tough ride."

Andy is tackling this challenge with old friend Rob from Tewkesbury, whose Dad died from cancer a few years ago. Andy explained, "We're hoping to complete the ride in around 10 days, cycling between 65/90 miles a day. The first couple of days with the climb out of Cornwall will be tough, but I am looking forward to visiting the Lake District to see if it's anywhere near as stunning as Wales!"

To keep costs to a minimum, the cyclists will be camping each night. Their wives have volunteered as back-up crew, to make sure they are as comfortable as possible after each daily ride. Ben, Andrew’s 16 year old son is taking charge of their website and will keep sponsors, friends and supporters updated with the latest news through his blog.

Andy rides a Cannondale which will be finely tuned for the challenge. Fortunately Andy does his own maintenance on his bike and will carry tools and spares. The back-up crew will carry additional spares in a trailer sponsored by Hafod Trailers, they’ll just be a phone call away if the guys encounter any problems.

To help Andrew raise money for the Macmillan Cancer care, visit www.end2end08.co.uk and use the Just Giving link. If you’d like to sponsor Andy, contact him on 01570 471311 or by e-mail: info[at]end2end08.co.uk. Press Contact: Tracy Kirtley Tel: 01579 471311
