Researchers To Combat Global Climate Change With Garlic

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Friday, June 19, 2009 0 comments
I found this fascinating article today:
Scientists from the University of Aberystwyth in Wales, screened more than 3 000 plant extracts. Of these, 10 had promise.

"One turned out to be our secret weapon,"
David Williams said.

In their rumen simulator, they found that the garlic extract cut methane output by 94 percent.

Not only that, but the garlic is an antibacterial, and so reduced the need for antibiotics, helped resistance to bovine TB, and killed intestinal worms.

Birds That Live In Cities Sing Higher-pitched Songs

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Wednesday, June 03, 2009 0 comments
I found this fascinating article today:

Birds that live in cities sing higher-pitched songs than their country-dwelling cousins in order to be heard above the urban din, according to scientists who have compared the songs of birds in different locations.

"Most man-made noise is of a fairly low frequency – the rumble of traffic, the clatter of machinery, that sort of thing," said Rupert Marshall of Aberystwyth University, who led the survey. "So the great tits in the city sing at a higher pitch to overcome that."

Internet Streaming Of Graduation Ceremonies

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Monday, June 01, 2009 0 comments
I found this fascinating article today:

Aberystwyth University has been successfully streaming graduation ceremonies over the internet for three years now.

Web development officer Simon Marshall said: “It has quite a broad range of appeal. It’s used by international students, but also by any relatives who can’t travel to the ceremony, even those within the UK. It’s not unusual for an undergraduate to be more than two hours from the family home when they’re at university, so it’s not always easy for people to attend. And, of course, tickets are limited.
