As discussed in Retouching Tools & Composing Collages Using Photoshop Flickr has a great array of tools and features, but did you know todays digital photos contain EXIF data, What is EXIF data? I hear you say, here is a breif explanation:

Almost all new digital cameras save JPEG (jpg) files with EXIF (Exchangeable Image File) data. Camera settings and scene information are recorded by the camera into the image file. Examples of stored information are shutter speed, date and time, focal length, exposure compensation, metering pattern and if a flash was used.

If you have an interest in photography, be it taking photo's or love viewing peoples digital works of art, take a look at: Aberystwyth Online Photography Flickr Group or Wales Online Photography Group where uses view and comment on each others digital photography.

Flickr is a great way of displaying your photo's to either friends, family or for the whole world to see, depending on what settings you have selected. Each photo can be given an individual title, description, tag or tags, also geotaged so others can see where the picture was taken using a digital map, such as Google Maps.

The software behind Flickr also tells you some useful information such as:
  • Taken in Ogmore-by-Sea, Wales (map) [Example of Geotaging]

Development Of Biofuels In The UK

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Wednesday, January 28, 2009 0 comments
I found this fascinating article today:

Scientists at Aberystwyth University are looking at ways of growing so-called "energy grasses".

Dr Iain Donnison said: "The announcement of this initiative by the BBSRC represents an important milestone in the development of biofuels in the UK, and the involvement of Aberystwyth University recognises the importance of the work that is being done here.

"Bioenergy crops are essentially biological solar panels and batteries. For example Miscanthus captures sunlight and stores it in a form which can be readily harvested and used as a fuel without using prime agricultural land.

"This project will build the underpinning crop science necessary to increase bioenergy yield and thereby reduce our dependence on fossil fuel.

Time capsule containing everything a small boy needed in the days before TV's and computer games included a train set, tin soldiers, a clockwork flying machine called an autogyro and a cork gun, along with wooden figures, games and letters of the alphabet etc.

The couple, from Aberystwyth, Mid Wales, have loaned the toys to the town's museum where they are on display for the Xbox generation to see.

"It is an absolute treasure, showing the childhood of a boy growing up in the 1930s," said museum curator Michael Freeman.

Direct Train Service To London From Mid Wales

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Tuesday, January 27, 2009 2 comments
Chairman Gareth Marston said: “There is an almost universal acknowledgment that a direct train service to London from Mid Wales is not so much a desirable but an essential requirement.

“Arriva have quite rightly identified that a significant percentage of existing passengers on the weekday 5.30am and 7.30am trains from Aberystwyth are travelling onward toward London and the South East and Birmingham New St is almost universally hated as a change point and will become worse with cross-country passengers forced into changing there and impending rebuilding work.

“We understand this proposal will need two extra (Class 158) diesel units which though are already in franchise are unavailable at the moment.

“This is coincidentally the number of units needed to make a two-hourly interval Crewe to Aberystwyth service and therefore hourly between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury – a longstanding aspiration,” Mr Marston added.

“Many of our members feel quite strongly that through services to Crewe would provide not only better connections to London via the Trent Valley than via the West Midlands but also open up many connectional opportunities across a wide area currently constrained by long waits at Shrewsbury and further changes en route. In addition this would enable a resolving of the problems faced connecting Aberystwyth to its hinterland north of the Dyfi estuary.”
