I was sent this article today:
For many people, growing older can mean increasing loneliness. In today’s world where social contacts are maintained through texting and twitter, older people can feel left behind. Everyone wants to do more to help, but may worry about how to fit it all in, with work and family commitments of their own.
Contact the Elderly have found a solution, by setting up monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties at local houses, for older people who would appreciate a bit of company. These groups give warmth and friendship, and the certainty that someone cares.
A group is being set up in Aberystwyth and we would like to tell you about it.
This is a great way of volunteering, as it doesn’t take up much of your time, and is great fun. You can offer to host a tea party in your own home once or twice a year. Hosts provide a simple afternoon tea. You need to like older people, have a downstairs loo and reasonably easy access.
Groups are generally fairly small, with 8-10 older members, and their drivers. They meet on Sunday afternoons from 2.00 till 4.00 pm.
Two Sunday afternoons in a whole year isn’t a huge amount to ask of anyone but for the isolated elderly it means a lot, the visit to your house could be the highlight of the month. To help, you just need to enjoy spending time with older people and live in a house with a downstairs toilet.
Or you may like to be a driver, picking up one or two older people and taking them along to enjoy afternoon tea, just once a month.
We also need a Group Coordinator to organise the monthly outings.
Just call Liz Morgan on 01938 810635 or visit www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk to find out more.
And I guarantee, if you decide to help this group, you will feel just great on a Monday morning.
