The Burston Drum Tells The Story Of First School Strike

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Wednesday, March 04, 2009
I was sent this fascinating article today:

5 March - 7 March | 7.30pm

By Ellen Dryden
Lyrics By Don Taylor
Music By Charles Young
Directed By Richard Hull

On the 1st April 1914, in the village of Burston, a group of children went on strike, to protest at the unfair dismissal of their teachers, Kitty and Tom Higdon. The Burston Drum tells the story of the events leading up to this historical first school strike; Kitty's battle to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable education for all the village children and Tom's fight to organise the villagers into a more democratic rural community.

The Arts Centre's vibrant youth theatre return to the main stage with this historical classic.
