A North Wales film-maker plans to complete seven marathons on seven consecutive days on seven continents – and shoot a documentary about it.

Superfit Stuart Kershaw, 27, an Aberystwyth University graduate, decided on the challenge to raise money for children in Uganda.

Infra-red Camera & Chandrayaan-1 Satellite

Academics from Aberystwyth University, contributed an infra-red camera to the Chandrayaan-1 satellite, which will orbit the moon for two years.

In the past few days, the £60m unmanned craft has reached its target orbit of 100km above the surface, which it takes two hours to circle.

Ffresh - Student Moving Image Festival of Wales

Ffresh, the Student Moving Image Festival of Wales, will be held in Aberystwyth in February and recognises excellent work created by students in Wales and also helps give them a foot on the ladder of their careers.

Students from the University of Glamorgan’s Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries who are shortlisted, include Jill Sutherland for Symtiotica in the factual category; Kevin Barlett, Kris Francis, Jenna Murphy and Dean James for Doritos and Mark Swooks and Curtis and McCarthy for Robot in the short shorts category.

The National Library Of Wales To Close At Weekends

The National Library for Wales in Aberystwyth is to close to the public on Saturdays from next April.

The library's board said it had to save £250,000 in the next financial year and blamed a "steady decrease in its budgets over recent years".

An Experiment With Yoghurt Pots And Flowers

Aberystwyth University scientist Dr John Warren noticed exposed coastal flowers had long stalks that could easily be damaged by the wind, while their related Alpine species tended to flower in cushions on the ground.

His paper, Do Flowers Wave to Attract Pollinators? appeared in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology and has attracted acclaim from the Smithsonian Magazine to local papers as far afield as St Helena, South Atlantic.

Armistice Day Aberystwyth Cenotaph

Aberystwyth is the first local council to officially comemorate non combatants as part of remembrance, indeed it is the only local authority in Britain to have an officially sanctioned event where a wreath of white poppies is lain at the Cenotaph (as well as the traditional wreath of red poppies) to remember all victims of war after a vote on the council in 2004. It has not been without controversy.

Ceredigion Street Lights To Go Out

Ceredigion's street light budget is facing a £50,000 shortfall.

The county has 6,193 street lights, but the turn off plan is unlikely to affect the towns of Aberystwyth, Aberaeron, Cardigan, Lampeter, Llandysul, Tregaron and New Quay.

Aberystwyth Collector Auctions A King's Story

A rare signed copy of a book written by Edward, Duke of Windsor, and dedicated to his wife Wallis Simpson goes up for auction.

Valued at £400, A King's Story - The Memoirs of the Duke of Windsor, was owned by a late Aberystwyth collector.

It is one of only 250 copies signed by the duke, who abdicated as King Edward VIII in 1936 to marry Mrs Simpson.

Pioneering E-books In Schools Through Mobile Phone SIM Cards & Computers

Researchers at the University of Aberystwyth's computer department and text book publishers are developing the online E-books and expect them to be up and running in time for Hackney City Academy to open its doors next September.

Mr Emmerson said: 'It will be as simple as downloading a ringtone to their SIM card, something practically all teenagers will now know how to do.

'You see people on the trains reading E-book versions of novels they have downloaded all the time. We are simply applying the same technology in the class room.

Woman Dies After 999 Request For Ambulance Was Refused

A 60-year-old woman died after her 999 request for a ambulance was refused by a doctor working for the emergency service, an inquest has heard.

Ruth Hedge is believed to have died at her home in Borth, Ceredigion, in April 2007, the Aberystwyth hearing was told.

Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth Rail Passenger Association

The Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth Rail Passenger Association (Sarpa) have sent their ideas to Trafnidiaeth Canolbarth Cymru (TRaCC) as part of the Regional Transport plan consultation.

Sarpa chairman Gareth Marston said: “It’s important that we now start making the right decisions.

“With the realisation that peak oil (supply) is now nearly upon us, we have provided a clear set of objectives for TraCC to use to help rectify the transport planning mistakes of the past.

“We hope that TraCC does not fall down the trap of pandering to parochial road schemes from self interested concerns that cannot see the bigger picture. TraCC must think strategically and look to the future.”

Aberystwyth Choral Society Brahms Requiem

On Saturday December 13th at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall at the Arts Centre,
Aberystwyth Choral Society will perform BRAHMS REQUIEM. They will be
joined by soloists Katharine Fuge, soprano, and Paul Carey Jones,
baritone, and a full professional orchestra, all conducted by David Russell Hulme.
Aberystwyth Choral Society’s concerts have perhaps the largest number
of performers on the Great Hall’s stage than any other classical
performances – a great evening of real live music!
