Pantycelyn opened in the early 1950s, and became one of the first halls of residence solely for Welsh-speaking students in 1974.
The Welsh language students union, Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Aberystwyth (UMCA), said Pantycelyn held many fond memories, but a new, modern base for students had to be built.
