Aberystwyth Choral Society celebrate their 40th Anniversary this year! They will perform Edward Elgar's Dream of Gerontius on Saturday April 24 at 8 pm in the Great Hall at the Arts Centre
The soloists will be Gaynor Keeble, mezzo-soprano, Adrian Thompson, tenor, and Simon Kirkbride, bass-baritone, and a full professional orchestra, all conducted by David Russell Hulme, who studied Elgar's music with Sir Adrian Boult, one of the composer's greatest interpereters.
The Dream of Gerontius is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work, and by some to be his magnum opus. The work's premiere was at the Birmingham Festival in 1900. It was inspired by a poem by Cardinal Newman, which relates the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God. Gerontius retains the affections of musicians and audiences - as it did for Elgar. Once, in the middle of conducting it he leant over to Raymond Jeremy, (later the resident viola player here at Aberystwyth University) who was in the front desk, and remarked "I still rather like this, you know!".

I found this fascinating article today:
This summer’s Square Festival will see an attempt at breaking the world record, with festival-goers invited to contribute to setting the record for the most people skinny dipping in the same place at the same time.
The event takes place on July 24-26 in Aberystwyth
