Cold Snap Result Of Jet Stream Moving South

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 1 comments
I found this fascinating article today:

Professor Neil Glasser, of the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, explained that the current cold snap is also a result of the jet stream moving further south than it usually is.

"The jet stream brings warm, wet and windy weather into Wales from the Atlantic," said Professor Glasser.

“But it has moved further south this year, instead of travelling over us."

"And the Western-influenced weather appears to have switched off as a result of this and given way to the cold dry air from the East, which brings snow from Russia and Siberian winds."

"Nobody really knows exactly what causes the jet stream to change direction; it is not random but it is an unpredictable event."

I found this fascinating article today:

Letters written by screen legend Richard Burton to an old friend are being exhibited for the first time.

The letters and telegrams to Dennis Burgess are being shown at the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth later this month.

They include an invite to Burton's 50th birthday party in 1975 from his then wife Elizabeth Taylor.

Arriva Trains Wales Forced To Cancel Services

I found this fascinating article today:

Arriva Trains Wales was forced to cancel services across its network after scores of drivers gave notice they would not be turning up for work in a dispute over pay and conditions.

The train drivers union Aslef, who are in advanced negotiations with the train operator, said they would not be supporting the one-day action.

Bronpadarn Mansion Woods & Developers Building Applications

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 0 comments
Housing development in Aber, yet Aberystwyth has the highest number of long-term unsold properties in the country with 70per cent remaining on the market for at least six months.

I found this fascinating article today:

For many years CIN members and Llanbadarn Fawr residents have fought to preserve Bronpadarn Mansion woods from a series of building applications from the developers Mr Fenton and ALP Property Management. They continued to regularly put in applications, obviously determined to try and build more houses in the woods and destroy vital green spaces, even though there is plenty of property to rent or buy in and around Aberystwyth.

Britain's Most Violent Prisoner Donates To Welsh Charity

Posted by Llanrhystud Childminder On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 0 comments
I found this fascinating article today:

Wales-born Charles Bronson – known as Britain’s most violent prisoner – has shown his soft side by donating two of his sketches to a Welsh charity.

The 56-year-old has spent 30 years in solitary confinement for his vicious outbursts, which included an incident in 1999 when he held a prison art teacher at knifepoint for 44 hours after the teacher criticised his work.

Bronson, who changed his name from Mike Peterson to that of the Death Wish actor in the 1970s, has given his two sketches to the Aberystwyth based Beacon of Hope charity.
